Three go meandering around Malta | Part one

We spent the last two summer holidays in Malta and what a great place it is. Not only for a holiday but as a stunning photographic location.

Malta is a beautiful and picturesque country that provides photographers with countless opportunities to capture stunning images. One of the best things about photographing Malta is the variety of landscapes and subjects that can be captured, from the sandy beaches to the ancient architecture, to the bustling markets and colorful fishing villages. The natural light is also a photographer’s dream, as the country is bathed in warm, golden light for much of the day. The first summer we were there in 2021, Malta was in the midst of a sweltering heatwave in excess of over 40 degrees!

If you’re looking to capture the iconic sights of Malta, then there are a few must-visit locations to add to your itinerary. The Blue Lagoon, for example, is a popular destination for photographers, with its crystal-clear turquoise waters and rugged coastline providing a beautiful backdrop. Similarly, the walled city of Mdina is a great place to capture the old-world charm of Malta, with its narrow streets, historic buildings, and sweeping views.

For our first trip to Malta we stayed at St Julian’s with fantastic views over Balluta Bay Beach. It’s a great base and within easy reach of most destinations on the small island we wanted to visit. Our favourite place was Valletta, a stunning fortified city, oozing charm and character with picturesque narrow cobbled streets impressive buildings and balconies. It’s virtually impossible not to get a incredible picture of this remarkable place.

One of the best times to photograph Malta is during the golden hour, which occurs just before sunrise and just after sunset. This is when the light is at its most beautiful, casting a warm, golden glow over the landscape. To make the most of this time, try to plan your shoots around the sunrise or sunset and experiment with different angles and compositions to capture the best light.

Another great way to capture the beauty of Malta is to explore the countryside and coastal areas. The rocky coastlines and rural landscapes provide a great opportunity to capture the rugged beauty of the country, with its dramatic cliffs, secluded coves, and historic landmarks.
