Up up and awaaaaaay!

The Harpenden Lions Club Highland Gathering. There were plenty of kilts in action on this beautiful early June summers day at Rothamsted Park, Harpenden, Hertfordshire.

Taking photographs at the Highland Games can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. The Highland Games are traditional Scottish events and the Harpenden Highland Gathering is the biggest games outside of Scotland in the UK that feature a variety of athletic competitions and cultural activities.

The Highland Games offer a wealth of photographic opportunities. Capturing the energy, tradition, and excitement of the games.

My top tips for taking great images at the Highland Games are as follows:

  1. Research the Event: Before attending the Highland Games, do some research to understand the various events and activities that take place. Familiarize yourself with the schedule, so you know when and where to find the most captivating moments.
  2. Capture the Culture: Look beyond the sports competitions. Highland Games are also a celebration of Scottish culture, so keep an eye out for musicians, dancers, and individuals dressed in traditional Scottish attire.
  3. Use a Telephoto Lens: Many events at the Highland Games, such as caber tossing and hammer throwing, may take place at a distance from the spectators. Using a telephoto lens will help you get closer shots of the action.
  4. Focus on Emotions: Try to capture the emotions and expressions of the participants and the audience. Facial expressions, cheers, and reactions can add depth and storytelling to your photos.
  5. Freezer or show movement in the Action: Highland Games are filled with dynamic movements and intense moments. Use a fast shutter speed to freeze the action and avoid motion blur in your shots. Or use a slow shutter speed to show the movement!
  6. Experiment with Angles: Don’t be afraid to get creative with your angles. Shoot from high above to capture an overview of the games, or get down low to emphasize the power and energy of the athletes.
  7. Include the Landscape: Highland Games often take place in scenic locations. Try to incorporate the beautiful Scottish landscape into your photographs to provide context and a sense of place.
