Chasing light and waves
We managed to escape for a few days during the February half term, craving some fresh air and coastal walks to shake off the winter blues. Unlike the last week’s fantastic winter sunshine, just a few weeks ago, it wasn’t quite the same.

Blimey, while it was chilly back home, Weymouth was absolutely Baltic! Temperatures hovered between 2-5°C, and with a biting wind blowing in from the sea, it felt more like -5°C. Forget a seaside tan, our cheeks were left rosy from the windburn instead!
We stayed for three days and found a fantastic B&B close to the beach and town.
The first day was grey, cold, and overcast, with a relentless wind. We explored the town, strolled down the pier, and wandered around the harbour. Unfortunately, the flat, dull light didn’t make for great photography conditions.

On the second day, the sun finally made an appearance, and the photography conditions improved dramatically. Fast-moving clouds raced across the sky, and though the wind was still strong, the lighting was far better than the previous day. We drove nine miles to Portland Bill Lighthouse, and the scenery was nothing short of spectacular.
The high winds created a huge swell, sending waves crashing against the rocks. I captured some stunning images, and it was mesmerising to stand there, watching the clouds race by and the sea roll endlessly.

We climbed up the magnificent Portland Bill Lighthouse, and if you thought the view from the ground was impressive, the panoramic vista from the top was simply breathtaking!
On our final day, the sky returned to a flat grey, the wind had calmed, and it felt slightly less cold. I managed to snap a few interesting shots, but the lighting wasn’t ideal.
Overall, it was a much-needed three-day break on the south coast. While the weather wasn’t perfect for a photography walkabout, I still came away with a handful of images I’m really pleased with.
