I recently had the honour of photographing my son’s biggest sporting achievement to date when he achieved his black belt in karate – a milestone that represents years of hard work, discipline, and resilience.
He began his martial arts journey at just seven years old, and over the course of seven years, I’ve watched him grow not just as a martial artist but as a person.
From his first white belt to the vibrant orange, blue, and yellow belts, each step brought new challenges and triumphs. But it wasn’t always smooth sailing.
Like many others, my son faced setbacks during his journey. The lockdown was particularly tough. Training at home without the camaraderie of his dojo and the guidance of his sensei in person, he lost his mojo and spirit for karate. It was heartbreaking to see him step away from something he loved for six months. But true to his resilient nature, he returned with a renewed focus and determination to achieve his goal.
Finally, at the age of 14, he earned the coveted black belt – a testament to his perseverance, passion, and the power of never giving up. His journey was guided by one incredible sensei whose encouragement and wisdom helped shape him into the martial artist he is today. As a parent, it’s been inspiring to witness his growth, and as a photographer, it’s been an honour to document this incredible achievement.
The images I captured tell a story, not just of a black belt, but of overcoming challenges, rediscovering passion, and chasing a dream. They freeze a moment in time that we’ll cherish forever.
